Mazda shows off limited edition MX-5

Posted by: GBlake  :  Category: Lifestyle

Here’s proof that old-school simple motoring isn’t on its way out. Mazda has released a new edition of the fabled MX-5 roadster, basing it on the highly successful MX-5 GT race car.

The new MX-5 Sport Black, as it’s called, comes with a black vinyl roof, privacy glass and matte black alloy wheels.

Although the race car version weighs just 850kg, its handling characteristics still make it into the 1,100kg road model. The Mazda MX-5 Sport Black is also distinguished by unique paint and a more generous equipment list, including gun metal 17in wheels, leather interior, Piano Black steering wheel and deco panel, and unique badging.

It also comes with a Bose audio system, Bluetooth, cruise control and fog lights, while its powered retractable roof goes up or down in 12 seconds. The performance remains the same though, courtesy of the 167bhp 2.0-litre engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

Obviously this limited edition MX-5 won’t be making it to our region. In fact, we were at the dealership the other day and they informed us, rather shamefully, that you can’t even buy a manual MX-5 in the UAE anymore; your only choice is a slush-box. Turns out we were wrong: old-school simple motoring is on its way out.

Here comes the bride

Posted by: GBlake  :  Category: Lifestyle

Actress Sonam Kapoor dazzled on Sunday night as she walked the ramp for noted designer Manish Malhotra as a surprise showstopper on the third day of the ongoing Synergy1 Delhi Couture Week.

Dressed in white lehenga and heavily embroidered red backless overcoat with embellished gold work, the actress opened the designer’s bridal collection inspired from the old world charm and majestic opulence of royalty that prevailed in India during 1930-1940.

Actress Urmila Matondkar also made a rare guest appearance.

The collection was an amalgamation of traditional and contemporary silhouettes with a touch of British influence.

"I have reinterpreted the 1930 and 1940s style of clothing in my designs. The collection had a flare of everything that a couture garment should have. I felt it’s time to move away from duplication and revisit the classic style with glamorous look," said Malhotra.

The collection included ghagras, lehengas, suits and saris and the colour palette ranged from cherry reds and burgundy with tones of mint green, aqua, and off whites.

Unlike other designers, Malhotra was the first to show clothes for both women and men. The menswear collection showcased heavily embroidered sherwanis in shades of black, burgundy, royal blue, beige and gold.

"I also showcased menswear because I thought why keep the bridegrooms alone. They are as conscious of their style nowadays as the brides. It’s time they also get their due importance," said Malhotra.

Ashima-Leena

Veteran actress Sharmila Tagore, who modelled for designer duo Ashima-Leena, said she was initially not comfortable walking the ramp.

"I was initially sceptical walking the ramp because I am more of a sari person and carrying a ghagra was bit uncomfortable. The designers had to convince me a lot to wear the outfit and suggested experimenting with my looks. Also I am glad I didn’t trip and fall," said Tagore, who wore a heavily embroidered gold-and-white ghaghra with a potli (bag).

Titled Adaa, Ashima-Leena showcased a collection which was a mix of peshwaz kurtas with ghagras, drapes over churidaars, dupattas, lehengas and saris. The colour palette varied from gold, muted bright colours, pinks, peachy roses, soft blues, soothing greens, red and beige on brocade chiffon and nets.

The designer duo, who made an effort to revive the lost charm of Indian culture, used heavy jewellery like neckpieces, earrings, and ankle rings that added elegance to the outfits.

Anju Modi

Actor Shakti Kapoor’s daughter Shraddha charmed everyone with her innocence and grace as she walked the ramp for designer Anju Modi.

Dressed in a voluminous gold-and-white gown, the actress captivated the audience as she opened the show, unlike the usual appearance of Bollywood celebs at the end.

"I was a bit nervous initially, but as I walked in, the excitement built up and everything just went with the flow. I am glad everything went well," said Kapoor.

Modi’s collection was called Maya and included a lot of angarkhas, saris, velvet jackets and lehengas in blue, ivory and maroon with elaborate embellishments and embroidery.

Shantanu-Nikhil

Veteran actor Shatrughan Sinha turned a bit emotional as daughter Sonakshi walked as a showstopper for designer duo Shantanu-Nikhil.

Sinha and his wife, Poonam, cheered for Sonakshi from the front row.

"My dad has always been like this. He is very supportive and feels proud of whatever I have achieved till now," said Sonakshi, who was dressed in a heavily-embroidered ivory jacket with a white lehenga.

The collection, titled Perfume, had a lot of dark shades on silhouettes, which predominantly featured gowns with applique work. It also had saris and lehengas in shades of serene whites, aqua blues, dusty orange and golden white.

"The collection defines the new fragrance of change in life as a modern bride and I guess Sonakshi is the perfect choice to depict the modern woman. The garments are a mix of traditional and contemporary," said Nikhil after the show.

Fifteen minutes with Martha Stewart

Posted by: GBlake  :  Category: Lifestyle

Only 15 minutes," said the PR person handling Martha Stewart’s visit to the UAE, hosted by Takhayal Entertainment, the company that publishes her magazines in the Middle East, including the recent Martha Stewart Weddings. "Room for negotiation?" I asked, aware of how slim the chance was of taking up a bigger portion of her 48-hour stopover last month.

At dusk, the breeze, still warm from a typical day in June, fluttered around the terrace of the Al Sarab Rooftop Lounge at the Jumeirah Bab Al Shams Desert Resort and Spa. Amidst the light flutter, an oud player performed. Arabian notes and the crackle of voices wafted down as I climbed up to the top storey that was cordoned off as a VIP-access area. Stewart, dressed in a sheer off-white blouse worn over a yellow one and paired with neutral trousers, extended a graceful hand. But I noticed the sartorial details after her most recognisable feature – her smile; endearing, unburdened and comforting.

Seated next to her was Yousuf Al Deeb, the chairman of Takhayal Entertainment that airs Stewart’s food shows exclusively on its Fatafeat television channel. He had invited her to learn about the local culture and promote her regional titles. The previous day, he had organised a signing at Tavola in Mall of the Emirates, where Stewart met fans.

The interview unfolded, starting with her previous association with the region before the Takhayal Entertainment connection. Stewart, her skin lustrous, and eyes, limpid brown, explained it had been "just some haphazard visits here and there. This is my first visit to the UAE. It’s all new, and exciting. I like the desert."

Article continues below

A country of interesting contrasts

Her itinerary had included visits to the Shaikh Mohammad Centre for Cultural Understanding; the Bur Dubai textile souq; the Bastakiya area; and a falconry experience at a desert resort.

"Any primers in terms of association?" I probed. "Well in college…," she paused, "I studied ancient history…. Mesopotamia, Persia and Egypt in art and architecture. But modern, very little, except what I see in the newspapers and watch on television. So it’s interesting to see first hand what life is really like here."

"Pleasantly surprised?" I asked, searching for that telling crinkle around the eyes. "Oh yes, very much," she replied immediately. "The people are so friendly. And aware of Western culture as well as their own."

As Stewart’s trip focused on local culture, I asked her if she was looking forward to anything in particular. To which she emphasised that she had been in the country only a short time. She said, "We got to see old Dubai. It was interesting to visit the old market. Then in contrast, we visited the Emirates Mall with all the modern, upscale shops. We signed magazines at Tavola; hundreds came… local residents, their families and foreigners. Obviously they are as thirsty for knowledge and home improvement as my readers in the States."

After exploring UAE-specific subjects, we shifted the focus to her regional perspective, specifically on four subjects – food, interiors, gardening and entertaining her brand is synonymous with.

First off was food. She said, "… it’s eclectic. We ate at the beautiful More Café at the Emirates Mall. That was delicious. But again they had tagines from Morocco, pasta from Italy… My favourite drink so far is the mint and lemon ale; I already tweeted the recipe and I am sure many have started making it at home. I am anxious to taste more of the food here, especially the local breads. I cook a little at home using Claudia Roden’s Middle Eastern cookbooks. I love Indian food too. You have, what, [a] 70 per cent Indian population here? So that kind of influence is obvious – beautiful curries and other dishes."

I asked if she planned to use any of these ideas in her own recipes.

"Of course! I use everything. I am a sponge for information," she replied.

Observations of heritage and hospitality

On interiors, Stewart said, "I am staying at the One & Only, The Palm, Dubai which has palace-like interiors and here I am, out here in this beautiful desert resort, which is rustic…I have not seen the interior of a real home, but I would love to. I visited home-furnishing shops, and it’s quite varied."

"Did it align with your personal interior design philoso… ?"

"Oh yes!" she said before I could finish my question. "In contemporary buildings with the high-rises, lots of windows, and open floor plans, the products we design will fit nicely."

On gardening, she said, "I love the landscape here. It’s beautiful. [Gardens] in the desert…you can liken these to some of the gardens in Arizona."

My next question dealt with entertaining -also the subject and title of her first book published in 1982. Given that Stewart is known for her unique visual presentation of food and catered events, I asked, "Are there more similarities or differences in hospitality and entertaining here?" She contextualised with an observation. I notice that they have lavish serving platters so there must be a lot of entertaining. At the magazine signing, many told me that they bake tremendous amounts at home. And that they love to entertain. Again having not witnessed that yet, I’d like to see for myself."

Stewart trailed off, forcing me to take stock of the time. "Excuse me," I said, turning to the PR person present. "How much longer doI have?"

"About five minutes," was the reply.

Stewart gave in to an amused chuckle, signalling me to continue.

"As a brand, how have you kept reinventing yourself?" I asked, little expecting an exhaustive response. But she explained, "It’s not so much reinvention as it is evolution. We continually treat the brand, build the brand, and add tothe brand. We don’t eliminate so much as we add. My belief: we design products that canbe heirlooms. We just finished designinga fantastic line of stainless steel pots and pans that rival – in quality and construction – the highest quality available in the United States. But ours are one-third the price. That is why we have a big market."

Tempted, I explored the possibility of Stewart translating her visit into the design and functionality of her future products. "Sure I am going to add!" she said.

We segued into talking about her global audiences in the context of how productsare designed. "Many products, especially the basics, are getting to be standard. Going through the shops earlier, I found many from India, China and North Africa. It was hard to find something uniquely Arab or made in the UAE. I like to find those [traditional] things. I like to see what was made and could be made."

"Are you hinting at artisanship?" I asked. "Yes, I look for that everywhere – fabric construction and beautiful woodwork and metal work," she said.

An empire built on teaching basics

"One last question," I blurted out, "You’ve taken something basic like ‘how to fold a fitted sheet’ [aired on The Oprah Winfrey Show] and turned it into an empire – Living Omnimedia with its expansive multimedia and merchandising portfolio. What are your thoughts on this?"

She said, "I’d like to think of myself asa replacement mom for so many womenwho join the workforce, leaving their kids at home – latchkey kids. They come back from school and let themselves in. Who is going to teach them to brush their teeth or make an omelette? I am. I am going to teach them all the good things."

In parting, I thanked her and left. I looked at my watch – my 15 minutes had passed.

By the way…

New Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupé Black Series released

Posted by: GBlake  :  Category: Lifestyle

Even though we drove the new Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupé last month, and loved it, we always knew it was just an appetiser. The support act for the main show. And the star has just entered the building – put your hands together for the new Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupé Black Series.

It’s the most powerful C-Class of all time, boasting a maximum output of 517bhp and a maximum torque of 620Nm. Its V8 engine ensures the Black Series accelerates from zero to 100kph in just 4.2 seconds, which is three-tenths quicker than an Audi RS5, and two-tenths ahead of the BMW M3 GTS, the hardcore version. And that’s understandable, because the Merc is also a lot more powerful, 67bhp stronger in fact.

Not only does it demolish quarter-miles, it also does corners, specially with the optional AMG Track Package including sportier tyres and active rear-axle transmission cooling. Then there’s the AMG Aerodynamics package which throws in flics, a functionally tuned front splitter and an adjustable carbon-fibre rear aerofoil.

To get those numbers from the 6.2-litre V8, engineers turned to their SLS AMG darling and copy-pasted most of its good bits. Still flying the natural aspiration flag high, AMG refined the lump with forged pistons, connecting rods and the crankshaft straight out of the SLS. The Black Series also got a new ECU to control the oily bits, and optimised engine oil cooling ensures the blistering performance is available reliably, and more of the time.

Article continues below

The transmission is the tried-and-trusted seven-speed unit, featuring four modes including a double-declutching function and launch control. Could the BMW M3 finally be ousted? We don’t know, but you certainly won’t find us placing any bets against the Black.

Visit the film location: Malta

Nursing home companies fall on final reimbursement rate cuts

Posted by: GBlake  :  Category: Business

Fri Jul 29, 2011 5:48pm EDT

<span class="articleLocation”>(Reuters) – Shares of skilled nursing home operators Kindred Healthcare (KND.N), Skilled Healthcare (SKH.N) and Sun Health Care (SUNH.O) fell in extended trade on Friday, after regulators slashed its final Medicare payments for fiscal 2012.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) cut payments for skilled nursing facilities by 11.1 percent, or $3.87 billion, to correct an unintended spike in payment levels and align Medicare payments with costs.

The CMS had introduced a new model in fiscal 2011 to ensure there would be no change in overall spending levels, but it instead led to a significant increase in Medicare expenditures.

In April, CMS had proposed two options for FY2012, one which would have resulted in a net increase of 1.5 percent in Medicare payments based on inflation or a cut of 11.3 percent in reimbursement rates.

Kindred shares fell 26 percent to $14.01, after closing at $18.84, while those of Skilled Healthcare slid 20 percent to $7.00, from its closing of $8.80 on Friday on the New York Stock Exchange.

Sun Healthcare shares plunged 39 percent to $4.25, after closing at $7 on Nasdaq.

Shelby Supercars Tuatara: It’s war

Posted by: GBlake  :  Category: Lifestyle

Top speed wars are pretty pointless. Sort of like the Cold War: lots of arm waving, shouting, and very little action. The Bugatti won a battle, then the old SSC Ultimate Aero took over, then the Super Sport reigned supreme for Molsheim again, with 431kph. The problem is, as much as these companies can arm-wave and shout about 400+ top speeds, it’s not as if you’re going to line up at the lights any time soon and fight it out for real. Top speed is irrelevant unless you have a dead-level 10km-long driveway. With a braking zone a couple of kilometres long.

But it’s still a war worth fighting, in the name of freedom. Top speed freedom of course. In the last round of fire, Shelby Supercars (not in any way related to the great Carroll) lay there coiled and wounded after the Veyron Super Sport slugged it one straight in the chest. Now SSC is back on its fighting feet, and with a hurt pride but intact honour the company’s loaded another clip. Safety’s off. Ready, aim, fire. Bam! 442kph.

The Veyron drops down like lead.

This latest weapon in SSC’s arsenal is called Tuatara. It’s touted as the next generation of the supercar, although we’d like to amend that last bit to "hypercar". The American company released snippets of information and even some official images earlier in the year, but we’ve had to wait until now for full details.

Article continues below

We’ll start with the name, which is shared with a New Zealand reptile that’s quite important in the evolutionary study of lizards. Yes, we did some actual research there, and we take it as a reminder of the Tuatara’s evolution from the Ultimate Aero. Plus, SSC’s press material says, "The Tuatara possesses the fastest evolving DNA in the world." Turns out they’ve also heard of Wikipedia…

But even though the two cars, old and new, look worlds apart — this one was designed by the talented pen of Jason Castriota — the formula is much the same: low weight, insane power and low drag.

The engine is still a twin-turbocharged V8, but has grown in capacity to 7.0-litres from the old 6.3. And where the old car used a six-speed manual transmission to try and grapple with the tarmac, the new car uses a much more effective seven-speed paddle-shifter with a triple-disc carbon clutch plate. If that’s too high-tech for you, you can still get it with a proper H-gate manual, and that one also comes with a seven-speed pattern. Sorry Porsche, someone beat you to it…

The body is made entirely out of carbon fibre, and the chassis too, leaving just the front and rear crash structures to be composed of aluminium. Even the wheels are ultra-lightweight one-piece carbon fibre items. Say what you will, but for all the might of the Veyron, it can’t boast about carbon fibre wheels.

And neither can it boast about its extraordinary power figures any more. While the Veyron Super Sport uses four turbos to feed its 8.0-litre W16, producing almost 1,200 horsepower, the Tuatara gets an astonishing 1,350bhp out of half as many cylinders and a litre less.

We don’t know how they did it, frankly, but we do know that the war isn’t won. Only another battle. Bugatti will be polishing its barrel.

Ultimate Aero

In 2007, SSC challenged the Bugatti Veyron’s top speed production record with a run in the US. The ultimate Aero had to beat Bugatti’s 407kph, and duly did so with a speed of 412kph, measured as an average speed over two timed runs, per Guinness World Record regulations. With an engine very similar to the Tuatara’s twin-turbo V8 — in fact many parts are shared by the two cars; suspension, block, brakes — the Ultimate Aero could do 0-100kph in less than three seconds, despite driving only the rear wheels.
